Mapping the Belt and Road:
A Country-Level Analysis

Edward Kemelmakher

March 20, 2023

In September 2013, China launched the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) — a massive global infrastructure initiative meant to increase infrastructure investment.

This interactive map analyzes the BRI by tracking specific economic information for 143 BRI participating nations. BRI participating nations are colored in shades of red to indicate the date each country joined the BRI — the more recent members are shaded in darker. Specifically, the map focuses on three economic indicators: the country's Debt to GDP Ratio, the value of trade with China, and the value of Chinese Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) since the country joined the BRI.

Additionally, USCSSO is working on developing country reports that will allow readers to gain insight and analysis on specific BRI projects in participating nations as well as the impact that the BRI has had on the economy, politics, and populace of each country.
